Rheinfall

Europe's answer to Niagara Falls! :)

There are boats that take you right to that bolder in the middle of the falls. And then, you take a bunch of steep steps to the top and in the process get drench! Yours truly obviously passed on it... It's where the flag is...
Sadly, it was a very cloudy day. But oh well... nothing can be done about it!
And Moi...
"Here kids. I think this wood is eatable..."
There is ths bridge that runs across the Rheinfall...
And the picture of the Rheinfall from up above it!
Next stop, Stein Am Rhein...

Fancy a nuclear reactor in your backyard?

Malaysia is thinking of having nuclear power in the next 10 odd years. But being a Malaysian, one can certainly imagine the amount of hue and cry when people find out where it'll be located. I need electricity, but just don't have it in my backyard!!! *sigh*

But not so for the Swiss... the below picture examplifies it...
In fact, even the train tracks run really close to these people's backyard. Something like 5 feet away! And here we are in Malaysia complaining about "I want LRT (light rain transit) system in my neighbourhood, but just not behind my house!!!"

Guess that's why our LRT extension project is d.e.a.d...

Einsiedeln

Einsedeln. A Benedictine Abbey situated on the top of a hill, way up away from Zurich; about 1 hour by trains. So what made it soooo famous? A few things, BUT chief of all is the Black Madonna. Yup, this is where is came from... And pretty interesting reason for it too... Later on that.

1st off, the abbey / church itself. Huge huh?
Come here all you weary and quench your thirst... Right from Our Dear Lady herself!
Priceless...
Unfortunately, God had other plans. Hence no blue skies for this, but looking back, it certainly makes the gold seem more striking! No?

Fee fiiii fooooo fum... I see a small house with my ... thumb!
Sad to say, one was NOT allowed to take photo's in church. So I can't show you what it's like. But am sure you'll agree with me that IF the outside was THIS grand, what more can be said about the INSIDE???
Click on http://www.kloster-einsiedeln.ch/ and then on Abbey.

I said that Notre Dame in Geneva was fantastic. Einsiedeln's was mind boggling!!! This last link show's it all...

Next stop, Germany (I think)! :)

Zurich!

Next stop Zurich! The day after my lake cruise, yours was taken to Zurich and to Einsedeln, which is located off Zurich. So it's a 3++ train ride to Zurich, and another 1 hour or so to Einsedeln.

But 1st, the train will take you past Lausanne and as you know, Lausanne has a really gorgeous view of the mountains and the lake...
And they grow vines... apparently, it's a World Heritage Site and the train runs right through it! :)
Window to the world?
My castle is taller and higher up than yours...
And yes, finally in Zurich!
Zurich is mainly a protestant city. And also very Germanic. As it lies very close to the Swiss/German border, so you can guess where the influences come from, not to mention it's choice of language. Geneva being the other end of the Swiss side (yup, yours practically travelled from end to end!), so it's Frenchy influence...

Anyway, wish I could have taken the below as a night shot...

Peek-a-boo!

Holy Cow! Sacrad Bleu...
Standing tall...
One thing: You definately don't have to worry about time. Why? Need help? Just look up! There's a clock here...
And here...
And in case you miss those 2...
I couldn't quite make this out but it's interesting to say the least!
I wonder who got whose idea? Those 2 figurines actually hold ... So CS Lewis? Or...?
This painting shows who have stayed here... you will get to see more of this in Stein Am Rhein.

And the main train station from another angle.
Geneva has it's lakeside inhabitors... So too does Zurich!
As I was in Zurich only for a short while, with the main reason being in Einsedeln, this was all 1 could take. So next stop, Einsedeln...

Around Lake Geneva

Wished I was on this boat but well, this one left very much earlier...
So I went on a 1 hour lake cruise around Lake Geneva. There is also a 3 hour one, that takes you further afar, but as I was still reeling from lack of sleep, I choose the 1 hour one. This was done the day after I went Paris and came back close to midnight! :)

So, quite up close and personal with the fountain then!

And the lighthouse...

You always see me shooting from the land towards the lake. Now, it's so the other way round...

Row, row, row your boat; Gently down the...er... lake?
Am told that having one of those houses up there facing the lake is to die for...
And a national if not favourite Genevan pastime!
One could be fooled to think that this is a sea...

And finally some more famous buildings... Care to guess?

And if you wanted to swim, you would do it here...
And back I was on dry land... I THINK the next should be Zurich! :)
